A second look

A lake. A village. A familiar walk home. A story does not need to start in an unfamiliar world. Sometimes it only needs to shift one certainty in the world we know.

What if a place preserved something its inhabitants wanted to forget? A landscape becomes a question.

Leave room for unease

Suspense is not only about what happens. It can emerge from the gap between what a character knows and what they think they know.

For a moment, the two no longer match. A sound has two explanations. A memory contradicts a conversation. The reader must decide whom to follow.

Take a question with you

On your next walk, ask what seems so ordinary that you never question it. What would happen if that one thing were not true?

You do not need the answer immediately. Some questions are more interesting while they remain open. Perhaps that is where the next story starts.
